Add a User to Google Search Console – 5 Easy Steps

As a growing business, you are probably thinking about employing staff, or maybe even hiring a digital marketing or SEO agency. At some point in the future you will need to give people access to certain areas of your business operations, and one of the first will be Google Search Console. In this post we’ll look at what you can do with Search Console, the 3 levels of access and lastly the steps to take when you need to add a user to Google Search Console.

It’s important to understand that access levels before you add a user to Google Search Console have a hierarchy, meaning that the “owner” level of access will have all of the permissions of the access levels below that, and so on.

What is Google Search Console

Google Search Console is a free Google service that allows business owners and website admins to monitor their site’s performance in Google Search results. It gives you a ton of valuable info on how Google crawls, indexes, and ranks your pages. With a set of tools and reports, Search Console helps you to understand how your website is viewed, with actionable data that you can use to improve visibility, performance, rankings and traffic volumes. Let’s look at some of the features in some more detail.

Performance Tracking

SMEs should use Google Search Console to track the performance of their website in the search results. The “Performance” section has detailed data on the number of clicks, impressions, click-through rates, and the average positions for all of the search terms you rank for. These stats helps you to understand which keywords are driving traffic to your site, allowing you to better tailor your content for customer needs in the future, based on real-time data.

Index Coverage Analysis

The “Index” section in Search Console shows you how Google crawls and indexes the pages on a website. Business owners can identify and resolve various issues; indexing errors, crawl problems, and blocked resources. Ensuring that the pages you want indexed are indexed (and those that you don’t are not indexed) is crucial for your website’s visibility in search results; if pages are not indexed they will not appear in the search results.

Mobile Usability Insights

At least 50% of your traffic comes from a mobile, maybe more, it’s essential for all businesses to have a mobile-friendly website. Google Search Console includes a “Mobile Usability” report, which highlights any issues that may affect the user experience on mobile devices. Use this information to make the necessary adjustments to your mobile site.

3 Google Search Console Access Levels

An account Owner has the highest level of permissions. The Owner permission level has total control over the websites in the Search Console account. In addition to viewing all of the data and performing all functions, Owners can also add or remove other users and change settings. Every account must have at least one owner.

Full User

Full user permission gives complete access to your Google Search Console account. If someone else manages your website’s SEO, they’ll need this level of access, but they can’t change your address or edit property owners. A full user can also disavow links, submit XML sitemaps, and index/no-index site pages.

Restricted User

The last level of Search Console access has restricted permissions, the only thing they can do is view your data. They won’t be able to take any actions in the account. This level might be granted to an SEO writing an SEO audit.
