How to Build a Pub Website

We were asked how to build a pub website. That's why we built one of the best in the country...

The web design contract for The Cosy Bar in Castlerea was the first of 15 or more contracts booked in April 2020 as part of the FutureProof Digital Covid 19 Special Offer. In conjunction with SiteGround Web Hosting, we agreed to work completely free of charge for businesses in Castlerea, Co. Roscommon. This included a free domain name and 3, 6 or 12 months of free web hosting. We wanted to do our bit to help with the local effort, and this seemed to me, to be the best use of my time. It has been enormously successful, and I am really proud of what we’ve achieved so far.

It’s true that most local pubs, especially in rural areas, don’t have a website. Recent years have been hard for the pub trade, and a website is way down the list of priorities. But, when Alan Cunningham heard about the offer he jumped at it. In my opinion we built one of the best pub websites in the country. Images will play a huge role in The Cosy Bar marketing strategy, and you’ll see in these screenshots, photoshop played a huge roll to.

Software : WordPress, Elementor Pro

About The Cosy Bar

The Cosy Bar is Castlerea’s favourite pub. From young to old, everyone loves to hit the Cosy Bar every now and then for it’s friendly atmosphere, great crac, live sport, pool, darts and juke box. The Cosy Bar was established more than two decades ago by the Cunningham family. Alan & Róisín run the bar these days with the help of Alan’s mum Peggy, who opened the pub, all those years ago with her husband, the late, great Mick Cunningham.

Check out the Cosy on a Saturday night, for the best atmosphere in town and if that wasn’t enough there are the hugely successful and popular pool and darts teams on Friday night. Watching a Manchester Utd. game in the Cosy is a must if you are visiting Castlerea, the family, and many of the locals are big fans.

Neon Sign Photoshop
Graphic Design & Photoshop

A Local Pub Website might not have a lot of content in terms of text but that offers the opportunity to create stunning and unique design elements. These graphic design elements were created off-site, in Photoshop. This image is not of photograph of a neon sign, it is created from scratch using text and layer styles. We also created a painting of the pub on rustic wooden boards, timber floor and brick wall effects, plus a variety of vintage metal sign effects. Building a website with Elementor Pro allows these elements to placed and sized to exact requirements and respond to device screen size.

Monthly Live Sport Update
Monthly Live Sport Update

The new currency is your email address and for The Cosy Bar, a Local Pub Website, I wanted to offer some value in return for this email address. A large part of appeal for many of this local pub's customers is live sport and keeping them up to date on the what and when will not only build the email list, it will bring in more customers. Every month, the events and details will be entered and an email will be automatically sent to everyone on the list. A number of specialist software applications were used to build this functionality; Advanced Custom Fields, Elementor Pro and MailChimp, an email marketing platform.

The Cosy Bar is a local business I know well, it’s a real pillar of the community, Alan and his family have been good friend for many years. As with all web design contracts, I need a starting point. In the case of The Cosy Bar I had… font; the sign above the door. I had colour; the paint colours on the interior and exterior of the building. I also had some visual elements in the form of brick work and timber flooring. All these elements would contribute to the look of the website.

Much of the marketing for The Cosy Bar will take place on social media but I did want to integrate some email marketing in the form of a monthly live sport update. This would use custom fields, post templates and MailChimp.
