My clients, in large part small business owners, ask me almost every day… “how long does SEO take to show results?” Search Engine Optimization is the most powerful driver of online visibility, organic traffic to your website and business growth, but how long does that take? The timeline for results can vary based on a number of factors, and they’re different for every business. 

If you have technical SEO issues for example, you could see excellent results in just a month or two, but if you’re in a crowded marketplace, where keyword competition is high and content quality or topical authority is your issue, then six or twelve months would be more realistic. Content is king, and it always will be. High-quality, relevant content is what Google wants to offer their users, because that’s what they want to read. Relevant and informative content, answering the user’s query and published regularly, signals to the search engines that your website is active and valuable, and you’ll be rewarded with better rankings. 

Technical SEO

A well-optimised website, with all of the best-practice technical SEO elements in place will rank higher almost by default. For example, if Google is unable to crawl your site because of a technical issue, then you won’t rank at all. Site speed, mobile responsiveness and crawlability are vital in 2024 and scoring well here will be rewarded by Google, and your customers.

Keyword Competition

Did you ever get an spam email offering you “Number 1 Ranking in 24 hours!!” ?… well, here’s why that’s nonsense. Three days ago we went live with a website for a business called Critical Testing Services, and yes, within 24 hours they ranked on page 1 for the term “critical testing services” but how long will it take to rank for the term “electrical engineer” ?… much, much longer. It’s all about the level of competition. The competition for your chosen keyword affects the time it takes to see results most of all. Highly competitive keywords in your industry may require more time and effort to rank for.

1. Focus on Long-tail Keywords

If you run a local business, optimising for local search can generate much needed traffic for a new website. Claim and optimise your Google Business Profile listing, encourage customer reviews, and make sure your business information is consistent across online directories, especially name, address and phone number, NAP.

Among other things, this audit will identify any Technical SEO issue your site might be experiencing… fix these first, before you do anything else.
